LOS ANGELES – “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2″ pulled in an estimated $92.1 million in domestic receipts on its opening day, MarketWatch reported Saturday, citing box-office tracker Hollywood.com.
The eighth and final film in the hugely-popular series from Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. Pictures, seen in 4,375 theaters Friday, shattered the previous record of $72.7 million set by “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” in November 2009.
“Deathly Hallows” set new marks for midnight premieres, raking in $43.5 million. That beat the previous record of $30 million set by “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” in June 2010. The “Deathly Hallows” midnight showings appeared in 3,800 theaters nationwide.
At its current pace, “Deathly Hallows” could also beat the opening-weekend record of $158.4 million set by “The Dark Knight,” which debuted in the same time frame in 2008, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com’s box-office division.
Both “Twilight” films are from independent studio Summit Entertainment. Like “Deathly Hallows,” “Dark Knight” is a Warner product.
Dergarabedian also reported that “Deathly Hallows” midnight screenings on Imax Corp. screens also posted a record of $2 million for 274 screens, beating the previous $1.4 million mark set by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.”
